What is the Map on mobile and how to open it

The Map shows your project on your phone's map: every site and building that has an address or coordinates, and every asset that has its own position or route. Pins take the colour of the asset status. Tap a pin to see its details, get directions to it, or create an issue right there.

Open the drawer and tap Map. The entry only appears when the Map module is switched on for the project. The header shows the title Map with the number of pins currently shown, a search button and a filters button.

When the screen opens it frames all your pins. If you arrive from a Show on map link in an asset or an issue, it goes straight to that pin.

The Map belongs to a project. It is not available in your personal workspace.

What the pins, lines and colours mean

  • A rounded square pin is a site or a building. Its colour is the most common status among the assets inside it.
  • A round pin is an asset with its own position, such as a turbine, a pole or a tower. Its colour is the asset's status and the icon comes from the asset type.
  • A coloured line is an asset with a route, such as an overhead line, a cable route or a pipeline. It has a round pin at its midpoint so it is easy to tap.
  • A donut with a number is a group of nearby pins. Tap it to zoom in.
  • The blue dot is you. It appears once you allow location access.

Equipment inside a building does not need its own pin. It is counted in the building's pin.

To change what the colours mean, open the filters and pick Status, Asset type or Open issues under Colour by. With Open issues, pins with open issues are red and the rest are green.

The map buttons: grouping, basemap, fit all pins and my location

The round buttons sit in a column at the bottom right. From top to bottom:

  • Move pins (four arrows): only shown when your role has assets.update. See the section on moving a pin.
  • Group pins (three circles): when it is on, nearby pins merge into a donut until you zoom in. When it is off, every pin is drawn on its own.
  • Basemap: switches between the street map and satellite.
  • Fit all pins (frame icon): zooms out to show every pin that matches your filters.
  • My location (target icon): centres the map on you. The first time, your phone asks for location access. The icon turns blue while your location is on.

Your basemap and grouping choices are remembered on this phone.

If you see "Location access is off for Cx Assistant", tap Open Settings and allow location for the app.

How to search and see what is nearby

  1. Tap the search button in the header.
  2. Type a site or building name, an asset ID, an address or a location in the box labelled "Search sites, buildings & assets…".
  3. Tap a result. The map moves to that pin and opens its card.

Nearby: leave the search box empty. When your location is known, the list is headed "Nearby · Closest to you first" and shows the closest pins with the distance to each one (up to 60). A red dot marks pins with open issues.

If your location is not shared yet, tap Use my location at the top of the list.

Search looks only at pins that match your current filters.

How to filter the map

  1. Tap the filters button in the header.
  2. Under Layers, show or hide Sites & buildings and Assets, or turn on With open issues to see only pins that have open issues.
  3. Under Colour by, choose what the colours mean: Status, Asset type or Open issues.
  4. Under Status and Type, pick one status or one asset type. A site or building stays visible when at least one asset inside it matches.
  5. Tap Apply.

The filters button turns blue with a small dot while filters are on, and the number next to the title shows how many pins match. To reset, open the filters again, tap Clear all and then Apply.

The pin card: details, issues and directions

Tap a pin and a card slides up from the bottom. The map stays live behind it: tap another pin to switch, or tap the map or the ✕ to close the card.

The chips at the top show the number of open issues, the number of assets (or sub-assets), the length of a line, and how far the pin is from you when your location is on.

For a site or building the card shows its Address, Assets by status and Asset types. For an asset it shows its Status, Part of (the parent asset, which you can tap), Location and its Sub-assets. Tap the Coordinates to copy them.

When there are open issues, the card lists the three most recently updated ones under Open issues. Tap one to open it.

Buttons:

  • Open asset: opens the full asset sheet.
  • Create issue: starts a new issue. From an asset pin, the asset is already linked. From a site or building pin, the location is filled in.
  • Add asset and Add building: see the section on adding things.
  • Use my position: see the section on moving a pin.
  • Directions: opens your phone's maps app with a route to the pin.

Lines and routes on the phone

An asset with a route is drawn as a line with a round pin at its midpoint. Tap the line or its pin to open the card.

For a line, the card shows its Length and number of points, and under Route its Start and End coordinates with Copy route. The directions button reads Directions to start and takes you to where the line begins, not to its middle.

Lines cannot be dragged. To record or replace a route on site, use Walk this span from the asset (see that section).

Kilometre points (KP) and the chainage reference line are shown on the web app only.

How to add a site, a building or an asset from the phone

The Add button sits at the bottom left. It is shown when you may create something: sites and buildings need the project owner, projects.locations.edit or projects.settings.manage; assets need assets.create.

  1. Tap Add. The Add to the map sheet opens.
  2. Choose Site, Building or Asset.
  3. A pin is fixed in the middle of the screen. Move the map under it until the pin sits on the right spot. The card at the bottom shows the address found there.
  4. Tap Place here.
  5. For a site or building: fill in Name (required), Code, Address and, for a building, Inside site. Tap Create.
  6. For an asset: the create asset sheet opens with the coordinates filled in. Give it an asset ID, pick a type and a category, and save.

The new pin appears and its card opens.

From a pin card you can also tap Add building on a site, or Add asset on a site or building. The map zooms to that pin, you place the new item the same way, and it is created inside that site or building.

On the web you can also pick an asset that already exists and give it a spot on the map. On the phone, use Use my position or Move pins for that.

How to move a pin or use your own position

Both ways need assets.update. Only asset pins can be moved. Lines cannot.

Use my position (you are standing at the asset):

  1. Tap the asset's pin.
  2. Tap Use my position on the card.
  3. A message titled "Use my position?" shows the coordinates and the GPS accuracy. Tap Confirm.
  4. The pin moves to where you are.

Move pins (drag):

  1. Tap the Move pins button (four arrows) at the bottom right.
  2. Press and hold an asset pin, then drag it to its new spot.
  3. The position is saved when you let go. If the save fails, the pin goes back.
  4. Tap the button again when you are done.

You can also set a position from the asset itself: open the asset and, in the Map position card, tap Use my position. Clear position removes the asset's own spot on the map; the asset keeps its location. Show on map takes you to its pin.

How to record a route by walking it (Walk this span)

Use this for an asset that spans a distance, such as a cable route, a fence line or a pipeline. You need to be able to edit the asset.

  1. Open the asset (from its pin with Open asset, or from the Assets screen).
  2. In the Map position card, tap Walk this span.
  3. Tap Start walking. Allow location access if your phone asks.
  4. Walk the line from one end to the other with the phone on you. A point is recorded every 5 m. The chip on the map shows the points, the length so far and the GPS accuracy.
  5. Keep the app open while you walk. Recording pauses in the background.
  6. Tap Stop at the end.
  7. Check the trace on the map. Tap Save route to keep it, Walk again to start over, or Discard.

Good to know:

  • The map follows you while you record. If you pan away, tap Follow me to come back.
  • When the GPS accuracy is poor (worse than about ±50 m), points are skipped until it improves.
  • A route needs at least two points.
  • If the asset already has a route, it is shown in grey. Saving replaces it.
  • Clear route in the Map position card removes the route. The asset keeps its position.

You can also walk a route while creating a new asset: the same button is in the create asset sheet.

What is only on the web

These Map features are on the web app and not on the phone:

  • Import KML or KMZ files.
  • Chainage: kilometre points (KP) and choosing the reference line.
  • Placing an asset that already exists by picking it from a list, and adding an existing asset to a site or building.
  • The Legend and the hover summary.
  • View all issues, which opens the issues list filtered to a pin.
  • Floor plans linked to a building.
  • Sharing a filtered view as a link.
  • Switching the Map module on or off for the project.

Permissions and Map troubleshooting on mobile

Permissions:

  • maps.read: see the map.
  • assets.update: Move pins and Use my position.
  • assets.create: add an asset from the map.
  • Project owner, projects.locations.edit or projects.settings.manage: add a site or a building.

Troubleshooting:

  • Map is not in the drawer, or the screen says "The map is off for this project": the Map module is off. A project admin can switch it on from the project settings on the web (the Modules card on the project details page).
  • "Access restricted — You don't have permission to see the map in this project": your role lacks maps.read. Ask a project admin.
  • "Nothing on the map yet": no site, building or asset has a position. Give your sites and buildings an address, give assets their own position, or tap Add on the map.
  • An asset is missing: it may have no position of its own. Equipment inside a building is counted in the building's pin. Also check your filters.
  • No blue dot, or Nearby is empty: location access is off. Tap the My location button, or allow location for Cx Assistant in your phone's settings.
  • "Your position is not available right now": the phone has no GPS fix. Move outdoors and try again.
  • "Could not load the map": check your connection and tap Retry.
  • No Add button or no Move pins button: your role lacks the permission.
  • Walk this span skips points: the GPS accuracy is poor. Wait for a better signal, away from buildings and steel roofs.
