Cx Assistant for Word & Excel — the Office add-ins

6 sections · Updated 2026-10-03 · Also available as Markdown

What are the Word and Excel add-ins

Cx Assistant is also available inside Microsoft Office as add-ins for Word and Excel. Each add-in opens the assistant in a task pane next to your document or workbook: you sign in with the same Cx Assistant account you use here and chat about the issues, assets, documentation, and more in one of your projects.

On top of project questions, the add-ins can work on the open file for you — in Excel the assistant can read and edit the workbook (values, formulas, tables, formatting, charts); in Word it can read and edit the document (text, structure, tables, charts, comments).

No project yet? The add-ins also work without one. In personal mode the assistant works on the open file and on your own My Workspace files; issues, RFIs, assets, and project documents need a project.

Everything respects your project permissions: the assistant can never see or change more than your account can.

Where to find the add-ins from the web app

The web app has a page that lists every place Cx Assistant runs, including the Word and Excel add-ins:

  1. Click your account menu at the bottom of the sidebar.
  2. Choose "Get the apps".
  3. Under "Inside Microsoft Office", find the Word add-in and Excel add-in cards and click Install guide. The guide opens in a new browser tab.

You can also reach the page from the search bar — type "apps" or "add-in" — and from the last slide of the intro tour.

How to install the Excel add-in

Install Cx Assistant for Excel from the Office Add-ins store:

  1. In Excel, go to Insert and click Add-ins (in Excel on the web, Add-ins is on the Home tab).
  2. Search for "Cx Assistant".
  3. Click Add.

After installing, an "Open Cx Assistant" button appears on Excel's Home tab — click it to open the assistant pane, then sign in with your usual Cx Assistant email and password.

How to install the Word add-in

Install Cx Assistant for Word from the Office Add-ins store:

  1. In Word, go to Insert and click Add-ins (in Word on the web, Add-ins is on the Home tab).

Requirements — which versions of Office are supported

The add-ins work in Office on the web and in Office desktop on Windows and Mac with a Microsoft 365 subscription.

Technically, the Excel add-in needs Excel API 1.4 or newer and the Word add-in needs Word API 1.3 or newer — recent Microsoft 365 builds provide both. A few newer features need newer Office builds — for example, working with comments in Word needs Word API 1.4 or newer. On older builds those features are not available while everything else keeps working.

Word and Excel are the add-ins available today; there is no PowerPoint add-in yet.

Signing in and getting help inside the add-ins

The add-ins use your existing Cx Assistant account — sign in with the same email and password you use on the web (including two-factor authentication if you have it enabled). Forgot your password? Use the forgot-password link on the sign-in screen. You can also create an account directly in the pane: after you sign up, open the confirmation link we email you, then sign in.

After signing in, the pane opens in your first project — or in My Workspace (personal mode) if you have no project yet. To switch, open the history panel (the ≡ icon in the pane's top bar) and use the selector at the top to pick a project or My Workspace. The pane remembers your choice.

Need help while in Word or Excel? Ask the assistant, or send a support ticket: open the history panel (≡), click the ⋮ button at the bottom of the panel, and choose "Help & support". Public support centres: cx-assistant.com/en/support/excel and cx-assistant.com/en/support/word.
